 Latin name: Ostrya virginiana

This native of Arkansas bears a distinctive fruit resembling hops.  A 1/4 inch nutlet is enclosed in a dried, leafy, inflated involucre. Serveral involucres hang from one stem.  They mature after August and are persistant through winter.  This tree was selected by Mrs. Reed.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Eastern Hophornbeam's bark is textured and flaky..
