Kentucky Coffee Tree

Latin name: Gymnocladus dioica

This tree’s wood is durable and used for fence posts and railway ties.  Posts sunk in the ground are said to last from 50-80 years.  The wood is too coarse grained for fine wood work.  The tree is noted for the beauty of its branching pattern against silhouetted in winter against the sky.  This specimen was planted by Mrs. Reed.

The Kentucky Coffee Tree’s bark is highly textured.
